£150m+ invested in Calderdale
Transport improvement programme
Work to widen the A629 at Salterhebble Hill is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2019, despite a number of major challenges.
The ambitious scheme, which includes widening Salterhebble Hill to four lanes; installing new traffic light technology and improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, is one of the biggest and most complex schemes ever undertaken by Calderdale Council.
Work on the project has been complicated by the discovery of three unchartered stone arch culverts; thought to have originated from the industrial revolution. This issue, along with challenging weather conditions, and work completed by the utility companies, has meant that expected delivery of the project is now the end of the year – still ahead of the contractual deadline of March 2019.
Despite these hold ups, work has been progressing well on the scheme and our Driving Economic Growth article and Investing in our Local Community article, captures some of the detail of the ambitious work being undertaken.
