Our vision

Working together as collaborators and partners, we can build on recent successes to create an economically and socially vibrant Calderdale.

It’s all about creating a place where people want to live, visit and work. A place where businesses want to locate. And a place that attracts investment and interest from a whole range of sectors.

Background information

A629 Halifax to Huddersfield Corridor Improvements

Calderdale lies within the Leeds City Region but also borders districts in the Manchester and Lancashire City Regions including Rochdale, Burnley and Rossendale. Calderdale’s strategic position within the LCR, with strong physical and geographical connections to Greater Manchester, provides it with significant opportunities to outperform its peers as a lynchpin within the Government’s ambitions to establish the Northern Powerhouse. Capitalising upon its position and economic strengths, Calderdale has the ability to serve as a bridge for flows of investment and labour capital, to the benefit of both regional economies.

Halifax Town Centre Delivery Plan

Our vision for Calderdale is to be an attractive place where people are prosperous, healthy and safe, supported by excellent services. It's a place where we value everyone being different and, through our actions, we can demonstrate that everyone matters.

The Piece Hall

The Piece Hall, one of the most extraordinary buildings in Britain, is currently undergoing a £19million conservation programme. Situated in the heart of Halifax, the unique Grade I listed building dates back to 1779 and was originally built to support the trading of ‘pieces’ of cloth.

It will be reimagined as a new cultural space for the town. On reopening, the stunning Georgian hall will reveal an impressive collection of independent shops, cafés and bars, a heritage centre and art gallery, and office space for the creative industries.

Home to one of Europe’s great public squares, a year round events programme will attract visitors from far and wide for events that can welcome up to 7,500 people at a time.

Halifax Borough Market

The Halifax Borough Market is the heart of Halifax town centre and, in many ways, our most important building. Following on from the significant investment in the Piece Hall, the Council is now looking to the future of this important facility as part of ongoing improvements to the town centre set out in the Halifax Town Centre Delivery Plan.

Halifax Leisure Centre

Exciting plans are progressing for a new combined swimming pool and leisure centre facility, which will provide Calderdale Council with a modern sports and leisure facility that better meets the needs of the community.

The project looks to provide sports and leisure facilities on the site of the existing North Bridge Leisure Centre in Halifax. The current facility mix will include a six-lane community competition swimming pool with spectator seating, separate learner pool, a 120 station gym, an eight-court sports hall and two multi-purpose activity studios, although this will be subject to further consultation with the public and stakeholders.

The Council is working closely with Sport England to secure grant funding for a sustainable future for Calderdale’s sport and leisure provision that meets the needs of an increasing population within the Borough, whilst attracting more potential visitors. Work is currently progressing on the detailed design, construction and consultation requirements to be presented to the Council’s Cabinet for consideration.
