£150 million Annual Economic Benefit
Boosting economic activity
Calderdale Council’s vision for the Northgate site is to create a mixed-use development, including a new sixth form centre and a range of commercial or residential units. The project aims to provide economic growth and employment opportunities in a prime town centre location, for the residents of Calderdale. This ‘good growth’ combines innovation and productivity with more and better jobs, improved skills and career progression for all.
The Council is working with Trinity Multi Academy Trust and Rastrick High School on the expanded sixth form offer, which will initially include 600 places for post-16 students from across Calderdale and beyond, helping achieve our ambition for all young people to receive a high-quality education.
The plans for the Northgate site aim to help strengthen the economy through increased footfall and consumer spending in the town centre and the retention of talented, skilled young people within Calderdale.
Work has now started on site to clear the former library building. This is an important step in a challenging construction programme for delivery of the new sixth form centre, which is due to open to students by autumn 2019. A planning application for the entire Northgate site has also been submitted and a report is due to be considered by the Council’s Cabinet this summer, outlining in more detail the preferred mix of uses for the parts of the site which are not required for the sixth form centre.
