£150m+ invested in Calderdale
Transport improvement programme
There will be nowhere like it in the world. The monumental Grade I listed structure is the finest example of a cloth hall, an iconic symbol of the important role played by Georgian Halifax at the booming centre of the world’s woollen trade.
The transformation of The Piece Hall is central to the renaissance of the whole town. When it opens for business, The Piece Hall will once again draw people from far and wide to experience the creative bustle of modern life in one of the most striking piazzas in Europe. The Piece Hall will be transformed into a 21st Century town square for everyone to enjoy. A special place to be, the princely architectural gem in the heart of the town will be a magnetic destination: a place where people will meet and all paths will cross in the exchange of Trade, Culture and Heritage. The immense, open air square will be enclosed by a mix of independent bars, restaurants, shops, cafes and creative businesses.
The stories of Georgian Halifax will be told in specially created exhibition spaces with an art gallery hosting visual arts. Whilst Yorkshire’s international reputation as a compelling destination takes hold, The Piece Hall is preparing for its most exciting chapter in decades. Creating a vibrant cultural quarter for a new generation, The Piece Hall conservation programme is led by Calderdale Council and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Garfield Weston Foundation and The Wolfson Foundation. On completion, The Piece Hall Trust is an independent body who will be responsible for managing the space and realising this next chapter. For more information, please visit thepiecehall.co.uk
