Halifax is a place of innovation and business, rich culture and heritage, strong local pride and community spirit,
...and it’s already benefitting from an exciting time of unprecedented investment to help make life better for everyone. And it was named the fifth happiest place to live in Yorkshire by Rightmove recently.
The 2036 Place Vision embraces all of this and uses it as the starting point to create an even stronger future where everyone thrives, in vibrant communities, where businesses can grow, people live healthy, fulfilled lives and feel supported, and we protect our environment.
It’s about being proud of our past, and even more excited about what’s to come. A town where together, we get things done. This is what builds a thriving town, place and economy.
Councillor Jane Scullion,
Leader of Calderdale Council
Objectives
Responding to the history and assets of Halifax, and firmly focused on the future, the Halifax 2036 Place Vision sets out six clear objectives:
An innovative, creative and enterprising town
We want to maximise the town’s economic growth potential to build a diverse, resilient and inclusive economy.
An accessible town
We will improve travel options and integrate transport to connect people and services.
A liveable town
We want to build an attractive mix of town centre living, good quality services, jobs, and opportunity. Halifax will be a place where people want to work, live, and visit.
A healthy, happy and hopeful town
Our vision is for a place that make everyday life easy and enjoyable, so people feel safe, secure, happy, and truly at home in Halifax.
A historic and cultural town
We will integrate and showcase the town's culture and heritage so the whole community benefits and we attract more visitors, future residents and investors.
A green and resilient town
We want to weave nature into the fabric of the town, improve energy efficiency to support health and wellbeing, and build climate resilience for businesses and residents alike.
Big Moves
We propose six Big Moves. These are comprehensive programmes designed to deliver multiple benefits across the Vision Objectives. Each Big Move includes key projects and future ambitions to turn this strategy into reality by 2036.

1 Grow: our inclusive and creative economy
This Big Move seeks to support growth in key sectors, including advanced manufacturing, finance and professional services and the green economy, as well as further leveraging creative and digital skills.
2 Strengthen: our social foundations
This Big Move puts forward projects to create places and spaces for communities to come together, grow and flourish - shared spaces, built by local people, where people can feel a sense of pride and belonging.
3 Connect: our people and places
This Big Move is focused on making it easier, healthier and cleaner to get about.
4 Reimagine: our town centre
Building on two decades of cultural investment, creative reuse, and public realm improvements, this Big Move will amplify the momentum already transforming Halifax.
5 Transform: our gateway neighbourhoods
Beyond the town centre core, this Big Move promotes a strategy for delivering sustainable, mixed-use neighbourhoods around Halifax's gateway areas and edges.
6 Unlock: The Hebble Valley Arc
This Big Move is about making the town healthier, greener and more connected, as well as creating attractive space for more residential development.
