Construction of the new Mixenden Community Hub is nearing completion, marking a major milestone in the transformation of north Halifax.

Developing a space where people can look after their health, learn, relax and socialise has been a longstanding ambition, and making it a reality is a significant moment for the Mixenden community, Calderdale Council, its partner organisations and contractor Code Building Solutions.

Today (Monday 9 December 2024), Cabinet Members and Illingworth and Mixenden Ward Councillors visited the community hub, ahead of the North Halifax Strategy being discussed at the Council’s Cabinet meeting this evening.

The strategy sets out the long-term commitment to the area and shared priorities and actions over the next 10 years, and was developed in partnership with the community.

Cllr Sarah Courtney, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, said:

“North Halifax is having a moment, with some longstanding regeneration projects nearing completion. We are ambitious for our towns and places, and are committed to seeing them, and the people within them, thrive.

“The final touches of building work at the new Mixenden Community Hub mark the start of the difference that the North Halifax Strategy will make in transforming the area and supporting people’s hopes and challenges. The hub is set to bring some great services and opportunities into the heart of this strong community.”

Mixenden Community Hub will bring:

  • A modern new library, due to open in the new year, where people can learn and get easy access to facilities, advice and IT equipment.
  • A Primary Care Network Hub, due to open in 2025, delivering community health care services (in addition to the nearby GP surgery and supported by the Calderdale Cares Partnership).
  • A shop or office space for rent.
  • A community garden, which supports wildlife and contributes towards Calderdale’s climate action priority.
  • Enhanced environmental systems that will collect and slowly release rainwater to help prevent flooding.

Construction of the hub is due to be completed before Christmas. The new library will soon be announcing its early 2025 opening date, and the Primary Care Network Hub is planning its fit-out and will also confirm its opening date soon.

Mixenden Community Hub adds to the recent transformative work at Beechwood and Sunny Bank parks – other north Halifax success stories that have created community and recreational spaces that residents can take pride in, showcasing the work that has been taking place in partnership with the community and local organisations.

The investment in north Halifax is part of Calderdale The Next Chapter, growing the economy, reducing inequalities, and building a sustainable future.

Mixenden Community Hub and the North Halifax Strategy support the Council’s priority for thriving towns and places and demonstrate the key qualities of Vision 2024. Calderdale reached its 50th anniversary on 1 April 2024, the ultimate year for Vision 2024.
