Why are we spending money on this work?
The Public Places in the Heart of Todmorden project is part of the Todmorden Town Deal, a £17.5m regeneration programme awarded to Todmorden from the UK Government’s Towns Fund.
The programme, led by Todmorden Town Deal Board, aims to regenerate towns and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth.
Why aren’t we spending the money for this project on potholes (or something else)?
The UK Government funds this project through the Towns Fund. We can only use the money for this project, and it is attached to specific spending criteria.
You can report a road or pavement defect.
What will the project deliver?
Plans include improvements to the outdoor market area with a new canopy and 48 stalls; a new town square and flexible event space; improvements to the existing green space with more trees, plants and seating; and a new car park.
When will construction start and end?
Construction will begin in 2026. The plan is for the project to be completed by spring 2027.
Will there be any changes to parking?
Yes.
We will remove three parking spaces in total. There will continue to be two spaces for blue badge holders and two short stay spaces at Bramsche Square. There will be no change to the two disabled bays next to the Central Methodist Church.
We will build a new car park on Rose Street with a disabled bay, motorcycle bays, and 51 car parking spaces.
Where can I park while construction is taking place?
We are aiming to complete work on the new Rose Street car park first to make sure parking is available throughout construction.
Why is the Council removing trees?
We will remove 9 trees identified as being in poor condition as part of this project. We are retaining 8 trees, including the two large trees at Bramsche Square, and we will plant up to 25 mature trees. Once the project is completed, there will be more trees in the town centre than before.
Will the outdoor market move during construction?
No. The outdoor market will continue to trade where it is, with fewer stalls.
How many new outdoor market stalls will there be?
There will be 48 fixed stalls and space for 2 pop-up stalls once the project is complete.
Will the indoor market continue to open as usual?
Yes. The indoor market will open as usual throughout the construction period. At times, we may use temporary ramps to maintain access to the market through the working area.
