Anyone passing over North Bridge over the last few months will have noticed the hive of activity below. Earlier this year the project to build a new leisure centre and swimming pool for Halifax moved into the construction stage.
The new centre is taking shape, and you can clearly see where the two new pools will be. When the project is complete families will enjoy the water and early-risers their morning lengths all within easy reach of Halifax town centre.
The piling work was completed over the summer. Holes have been drilled for the 300 plus piles that will underpin the foundations and provide structural support for the new building.
Excavation and concrete works for the pump pits, lift shaft pits, and balance tanks is complete. Specialist pool contractors have been brought in to install under-slab pipework for the pool filtration and pump systems.
The work to date has not been without its challenges. The team encountered a well, piles, and buried structures during excavations that weren’t picked up by surveys. They have adapted the foundation designs to work around the obstructions in the ground.
This autumn we will begin to see the shape of the new structure as steels are installed to form the frame of the new building. The refurbishment of the sports hall from the old North Bridge Leisure Centre will start this year too. The refurbished sports hall will be worked into the new leisure facility.
