Cousin Lane to Keighley Rd and snickets between Ovenden Way and Keighley Road

In March 2023, we invited people to look at the most up-to-date plans for the north Halifax Improved Streets for People projects and share their thoughts. We held sessions with local interested organisations, such as businesses, community groups, bus operators, disability groups and cycling forums, and we accepted online responses.

We used the feedback to amend the plans. We have kept the current parking provision along Cousin Lane in Ovenden and made changes to the design of the proposed cycle lane. We have reduced the number of trees lost. The revised scheme includes the loss of just one tree and added trees to help compensate for this small loss.

The following summarises the proposals for zone 3 of the project as of December 2023.

Zone 3 – Sheet 1 – Junction of Keighley Road and Cousin Lane near Morrisons

We have made more space to walk and cycle safely and put measures in place to reduce the speed of vehicles through the area. We will visually narrow the carriageway, using an imprinted material down the centre of the carriageway, and we will put in a new pedestrian crossing. Markings will be used to aid navigation through the area and to make it clear when different road users might be entering and exiting the carriageway. One tree will be removed at the junction with Turner Place to allow for a new layout.

Plan features junction of Keighley Road and Cousin Lane near Morrisons. Key features include wider footways and narrower carriageways, a new two stage crossing and an imprinted strip down the centre of the road.

Zone 3 – Sheet 2 – Cousin Lane, includes junctions with Myrtle Drive and Furness Grove

We’re making the carriageway visually narrower and narrowing the entrances and exits to junctions, stopping vehicles from cutting corners, and making more space for cycling and walking.

Plan features a section of Cousin Lane with junctions with Myrtle Drive and Furness Grove. Planting features on corners to narrow junctions and features are used to make the carriageway visibly narrower to reduce vehicle speeds.

Zone 3 – Sheet 3 – Cousin Lane, includes junctions with Sandown Road and Myrtle Grove

We’ll add new surfaces in the centre of the road and at junctions that encourage safer speeds and more considerate use of the road at key points along Cousin Lane.

Plan includes junctions with Sandown Road and Myrtle Grove. Features like imprinted surfaces down the centre of the road make the carriageway visibly narrower to reduce vehicle speeds.

Zone 3 – Sheet 4 – Cousin Lane, includes junctions with Sandown Avenue, Bank Edge Road, and Moor Lane

We’ll install speed humps designed to be comfortable for cyclists or people travelling on the bus. At Moor Lane we’re going to remove the roundabout to give priority to traffic travelling along Cousin Lane and redesign the junction to make it safer for more vulnerable road users.

Plan includes junctions with Sandown Avenue, Bank Edge Road, and Moor Lane. The new layout features sinusoidal humps. These are humps that are comfortable for cyclists to use and that have a low impact on confort for people on buses. The junction where Moor Lane joins Cousin Lane will be converted from a roundabout to a T-junction.

Zone 3 – Sheet 5 – Cousin Lane, includes entrance to Dean Field Community Primary School

We’ll add new surfaces to encourage traffic to slow down at key points along Cousin Lane and make it easier and safer for people to cross the road.

Plan includes entrance to Dean Field Community Primary School. Raised surfaces on this section improve the crossing experience for pedestrians and reduce vehicle speeds.

Zone 3 - Sheet 6 – Cousin Lane, includes junctions with Club Lane and Moorlands Avenue

We’re going to remove the roundabout at the junction with Club Lane to give priority to traffic travelling along Cousin Lane. The new junction layout will be safer for more vulnerable road users. Bays will be marked out to make it easier for drivers to know where parking is available.

Plan includes includes junctions with Club Lane and Moorlands Avenue. The junction where Club Lane joins Cousin Lane will be converted from a roundabout to a T-junction. Other features like raised surfaces and narrower carriageways are used on this section too.

Zone 3 – Sheet 7 – Cousin Lane, includes junctions with Page Hill, Moorland Close, and Nursery Lane

Bus stops, parking bays, and disabled spaces are to be kept through this area. At the approach to the roundabout at the junction with Nursery Lane cycle routes will be clearly marked as they enter and exit the carriageway. A new crossing for cyclists and pedestrians will allow people to cross Nursery Lane and continue on towards Ovenden Way. We will put a new zebra crossing in on Nursery Lane to make it easier to cross the road to the church and the shops.

Plan includes junctions with Page Hill, Moorland Close, and Nursery Lane. Features like raised surfaces and narrower carriageways are used to slow down vehicles. Surfaces are used to show all road users where cyclists may enter or exit the carriageway.
