Zone 2 – Shroggs Road to Cousin Lane

In zone 2 we’re creating new cycling routes, shared walking and cycling routes, and a better walking experience. There will be features to make roads safer, new crossings, and new parking spaces.

Benefits

New cycling routes

A new two-way segregated cycling route along Ovenden Way will link Cousin Lane with A629 Ovenden Road. We will add new crossings that can be used whether you are walking or cycling.

The new routes will connect the area with Halifax town centre for work, study, shopping, leisure and onward travel.

Shared space for walking and cycling

We’re creating a new shared walking and cycling route along the west side of A629 Ovenden Road that will link Ovenden Way with Shroggs Road.

A better walking experience

We’re improving the look and feel of public spaces along the new routes. There will be landscaping and new crossings.

For the first time, people walking along Ovenden Way will be able to use a continuous footway raised to cross side streets, so there is no need to step off the kerb and back on at the other side.  We will add new crossings for walking and cycling.

Safe roads

We will replace some speed bumps to match the new layout, and add new ones. We will add new crossings.

Plans

Overview of (the most up-to-date) plans for Shroggs Road to Cousin Lane [full size]

We’re proposing:

  • A new zebra crossing on Nursery Lane.
  • New, wider pavements on both sides of Ovenden Way with separate footpaths and cycleways.
  • To raise the level at the ends of side streets on Ovenden Way to create continuous footpaths and cycleways, and slow traffic turning into these roads.
  • Improved crossings at islands with links to bus stops.
  • New zebra crossings on Ovenden Way.
  • New crossings at the bottom of Ovenden Way within the traffic signals at the Ovenden Road junction.
  • New shared walking and cycling route along the widened pavement of A629 Ovenden Road (west side) between Ovenden Way and Shroggs Road.
  • To remove the bus lay-by at the junction of Ovenden Road and Ovenden Way to make room for walking and cycling routes and to make it easier for buses to pull out, improving journey times.
