Pellon routes to school

Plans

The plans include upgrades for:

Junctions and road layouts

Raised table crossings and wider pavements will slow down traffic and create more space for walking, cycling and other forms of active travel.

Improvements to snickets

We are widening snickets and improving access to routes away from roads.

Green space

There will be new green spaces and improvements for existing ones. Changes to roads will slow down traffic and provide more space for people walking, cycling, or using wheelchairs or prams.

These proposals complement Community Streets proposals in Ash Green and Mixenden.

Benefits

With these proposals for Ling Bob and Pellon we aim to:

  • encourage walking, scooting and cycling,
  • make school streets safer and more attractive,
  • make the neighbourhood a safer place for playing outside,
  • create places to rest and interact with neighbours, and
  • build attractive places for people and wildlife.

The benefits for the area include:

Fewer vehicles

The changes will reduce the number of vehicles, and the speed that they travel close to these schools. There will be lower emissions and safer streets.

Health

The changes have been designed to make walking, cycling and other forms of active travel an easier and more attractive option for people. The benefits of active travel and physical activity are well documented and range from positive effect on mood and mental health to better heart health.

Sense of community

We’re adding benches and making the area a more pleasant place to spend time, where children are more likely to play outside together.

Nature

We’re improving biodiversity and adding natural solutions for sustainable drainage.

Design

Ashville Gardens and Rye Lane

We’re adding traffic calming measures along Rye Lane, and widening the snicket from Ashville Gardens to Christ Church Pellon Primary School.

Removal of roundabouts

We’re removing roundabouts at the Highroad Well Lane/Sandbeds Road, Rye Lane/Ryecroft Lane, and Highroad Well Lane/Albert Road junctions.

We’re replacing them  with narrower routes that slow traffic and allow for added green space.

Ling Bob Junior Infant and Nursery School

We’re improving the green space and adding benches between Ling Bob and Highroad Well Lane. There will be a new safer raised crossing on Rye Lane leading to the school snicket. We will add a large raised area and new junction at Highroad Well Lane/Albert Road with a formal crossing provision that will prioritise people walking, cycling, and using scooters or prams

Christ Church School

Two formal crossings and wider pavements will make waiting for the bus and journeys to and from school safer.
